Shows some self-direction:

 

Three year olds show their independence by:

  • Engaging eagerly in solitary or parallel play
  • Performing self help skills without an individual reminder
  • Choosing specific items to use in a project
  • Selecting one book from several choices
  • Hanging up book bag and putting coat away
  • Choosing an activity and participating in it.

 

Four year olds show their independence and initiative by:

  • Singing songs at circle time
  • Joining other children in the dramatic play area and choosing a role that fits the play of others
  • Sitting at the table and exchanging ideas and thoughts
  • Adapting to playground games and becoming part of the action.
